JIR – Justice Involved Recovery

There is a correlation between criminal behavior, homelessness, mental health & substance use disorders. Whether it is hereditary or not, the facts do not lie. Jails represent the largest mental health facilities in the United States. In fact, 2 of the 3, largest facilities in the U.S. are the Cook County Jail (Chicago, IL) and the Los Angeles County Jail (Los Angeles, CA). Statistically, the overall prison population in the United States consist of approximately 65-70, percent of inmates suffering from co-occurring disorders.

Behavioral Crossroads Recovery offers a curriculum that supports individuals that have legal issues at several demographic levels. BCR has governmental contracts that support local county, state and federal agencies in the rehabilitation and recovery of individuals caught in this recidivistic justice involved cycle. Many individuals do not know the difference between mental health and substance use disorders and cannot connect the trauma in their lives with the use or misuse of controlled substances or medications. Behavioral Crossroads and Behavioral Crossroads Recovery are fully co-occurring treatment centers that can support either mental health or substance use disorders separately or simultaneously. We treat these individuals in a dual care model. For many substance use disorder clients, clean time that is supported by incarceration creates certain risks in the community for relapse. Medication management for mental health disorders becomes more apparent as individuals feel stress, anxiety, paranoia, and depression that emerge as more and more clean time accumulates. The JIR tract allows these individuals to understand symptomatology and aids the process of self-realization offering an insight to their illness. Awareness of an individual’s diagnosis is key to recovery.

Other techniques and tools are available for those in need of support in the community and rehabilitation. We offer support in job search, self-advocacy, and resume building. Individuals with a criminal record often have low self-esteem. Our counselors offer tips and coaching strategies to individuals by focusing on active listening skills, coping techniques as well as preparing for interviews. The Client is educated and equipped with the knowledge of first impression skills and how to approach an employer by executing techniques such as the utilization of direct eye contact and positive body language. It is important for our JIR clients to understand critical thinking and work against negative thoughts and actions that put them on the wrong path prior. Our clients are coached to develop confidence and rise above their imperfections and shortcomings to avoid obstacles and old patterns. Our staff will coach and engage each client with methods designed to supersede previous negative behaviors, so that they may sell themselves and maintain a good first impression when interviewing. Following through with job opportunities and gaining experience is a necessary step to rebuild and recover self-esteem. We also focus on healthy decision-making skills, as well as rational verses irrational thinking in association with rewards and consequences. Clients are educated and taught to establish morals and values that are geared towards making positive decisions to eliminate consequential outcomes. We believe our clients should not let their past decisions and experiences dictate the present. Where there was dysfunction, manipulation, and self-centered behaviors we strive for compassion, honesty, and integrity. The JIR tract is based on a 12-16 week SAMHSA model that focuses on both individual and group sessions up to 3 hours a week.
